Protect Privacy Student NAPLAN: Stop NAPLAN from PLANning your child's future

We, NSW Parents Council, support to abolish the publication of NAPLAN test results in the 'My School' website. The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing is an annual assessment taken by students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The publication of NAPLAN test results and the freedom of access to the sensitive information being made publicly accessible to the media and politicians is the main issue NSW Parents Council is currently try to address and resolve. The NAPLAN testing in 2015 will occur from 12th May to 14th May. The ‘My School’ site publishes up-to-date data concerning over 9,500 schools in Australia, including their NAPLAN test results being available for public viewing. The government argued that by creating this site it would provide parents and education professionals an insight to each school to make the best choices for themselves and their children. However, some argue that the implementation of such website has changed the purpose of the test from one which informs schools and education systems about a small aspect of schooling, to being a high stakes test that potentially measures the quality of a whole school and comparing it to others. The publication of the NAPLAN results creates unhealthy competition and negative psychological effects, which can be harmful to both the curriculum taught and the students’ welfare. Therefore, NSW Parents Council is now calling for parents and education professionals who support abolishing the publication of NAPLAN results by signing the online petition here.
